The Centre for Musical Research at Bath Spa University is holding a one-day symposium on verbal notation, an approach to scoring that uses the written word, as opposed to symbols, to convey information to whoever chooses to interpret it. Verbal notation has been adopted and developed in the field commonly referred to as experimental music, as well as related areas of arts practice involving performance or object making.

Proposals for papers on any aspect of verbal notation and its realisation are welcome.

The symposium follows a two-year AHRC-funded research project resulting in a book on verbal notation, to be published by Continuum in late 2011.

Symposium Organiser: Dr. James Saunders (Head of Centre for Musical Research, Bath Spa University)

Symposium Administrator: Claire Jones (Administrator for the Centre for Learning and Teaching Development, Bath Spa University)
